Tübingen's famous Neckar front
Tübingen, an old university town and administrative center, is located 40km south of Stuttgart between the Schönbuch Forest and the Swabian Hills. The townscape is dominated by historical buildings, large parks and wooded areas. Narrow cobblestone alleys wind between countless timber-framed houses dating back to the 15th and 16th century. Lining the streets are numerous outdoor cafés, wine taverns and student bars as well as unusual small shops. In Tübingen the flair of a medieval city centre combines with the youthful vitality of a student town. Running right through the middle is the River Neckar, where you can take a boat trip in a “Stocherkahn” (similar to the punts of Oxbridge) or stroll along its scenic riverbanks. Exhibitions at Tübingen’s famous art galleries and museums, as well as theatres, cinemas and festivals emphasize the diversity of Tübingen’s cultural aspects.

For hundreds of years, Tübingen has also been a town of science. Earl Eberhard the Bearded, later Duke of Württemberg, founded the University of Tübingen in 1477. Facilities such as the University Medical Center, the Max Planck Institutes and other institutions offer an excellent research and learning environment.
