There is an enormous potential for evolution within each of our microbiomes, with billions of new mutations being created each day. In this talk, I will highlight the power of tracking within-person evolution for understanding microbiome community assembly, identifying bacterial genes critical to in vivo survival, and for understanding host-microbe interactions. I will focus on examples from the human skin microbiome, a tractable system for understanding the intersection of ecology and evolution in the microbiome.
